Effective FM-based Early Warning System

The System
An effective warning system reduces the impact of a disaster by giving the authorities a means to alert the public and first responders and provide them with critcal timely information so that they can best react to the situation.

The public warnings are distributed as Radio-Data-System (RDS) signals over the normal FM broadcast stations. RDS is a service of the FM broadcasting stations: In addition to the normal radio program they transmit an inaudible signal containing the warning alert information. The Radio-Data-System is used world-wide and can be a component part of every broadcasting station.

Radio is the best mass media outlet. Very few households, offices etc. are without a radio. In combination with the RDS system, this radio infrastructure can be used to reach the public efficiently with needed information. In addition external devices like large displays, flashing lights, etc. may be hooked up to the receiver via serial interface or a relay.
